TapJA
An open-loop, contactless fare payment concept for Jamaica’s public transit system — one reader, any tap, no rider left behind.
The problem
Jamaica’s public transport fare collection still runs largely on cash and single-operator closed-loop cards. JUTC’s SmartFare card works only on JUTC buses, and no Jamaican transit system lets a rider simply tap the contactless bank card or phone they already carry — the way OMNY works in New York or TfL works in London.
The approach
TapJA lets a commuter present a bank card, a phone wallet, or a TapJA fallback card to the same reader — the reader identifies the tap type automatically, with no selection step and no separate queue for riders without a bank account.
Real-time balance status for the fallback card
Fare deducted normally, balance shown at tap.
Rider still boards; a reminder shows at the reader.
Rider still boards on credit; cleared on next top-up.
Where it stands
TapJA is currently a working prototype and proposal, framed as an extension of JUTC’s existing SmartFare system rather than a replacement for it. The next step is a pilot on a single high-traffic route.
